ROBERT ALDERMAN INTERVIEW:
JANUARY 14TH 2022

How and when did you learn to ride a bicycle?

In my parents back garden in England as a kid. I remember falling into the flower beds a few times. Later I rode to and from school every day -  no helmets in those days. I didn’t ride seriously again until 11 years ago when I took part in my first Dolphin Cycling Challenge and then  joined SBW.

In regards to cycling what is your personal philosophy?

I enjoy the freedom of being out on my bike, with good friends and keeping healthy at the same time. It’s a great escape after a busy week at work. I also enjoy supporting worthy causes through charity rides.

What do you think someone might be surprised to know about you?

I’m not originally from around these parts !!!!

What made you become a member of South Broward Wheelers?

After I finished my first

Dolphin Cycling Challenge I thought “what now?” A fellow cycling novice told me about SBW and I came along for a ride and found everyone to be really friendly, riding at sensible paces and most importantly, safely.

Any personal information you would like to share? Where you were born, favorite hobbies, Any great cycling trips you have taken.

I was born in South London and lived there until 1993 when I moved to Florida through work. My main hobby is cycling. I enjoy watching other sports especially English football (soccer) and the NFL. I’ve been a season ticket holder at the Miami Dolphins for 28 years.

My most memorable cycling trip was a week in the Carolinas, but those hills were a brut, both up and down. The best ride that I have done is the RideLondon Surrey sportive that finished on the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

How can we make cycling more enjoyable for everyone?

Endevour to ride safely at all times by being predicable and offering encouragement to newer and less experienced riders.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while on a bicycle?

Hitting an armadillo probably. It curled up and rolled off down the road like a bowling ball !

Any hair-raising experiences you could share?

Riding down Honister Pass in the Lake District in England. It was a 28% gradient. I have never grasped my brake levers so tightly and for so long before or since.

Calling all
RIDE LEADERS!

We are pleased to see more of you attending our weekend rides again. Some members have asked that we start alternating ride start locations again on our Saturday rides. We are happy to do this but need ride leaders for each of the three groups.

If you would like to volunteer please contact me by e-mail or in person on a weekend ride so I can add you to our ride leader calendar.

We would also like to start an Assistant Ride Leader program. Members interested in becoming leaders will be paired with an experienced leader on a ride so that they can learn what is required. Let us know if you would like to join this program.

We are bringing back our monthly $25 Starbucks gift cards & other raffle prizes.

How do you enter, you ask???

Sign up, lead a ride and You're IN!

The more rides you lead, the more entries you get!!!

Winners will be announced once a month on our Newsletter

If you would like to lead a ride, please visit our Event Calendar reach out to our Ride Director, Robert Alderman, or any of the other Board Members and let them know what ride you would like to lead.
