South Broward Wheelers has joined forces once again with Evan Butters in putting together this charity event  in honor of his grandfather, Benjamin Goldman, who passed away from Alzheimers.

Why a cycling event?

Well, Evan's grandfather, Ben, was an avid cyclist for as long as he can remember.  Even when he was 85 yrs old, he would still ride every day from his apartment in Hallandale and bike 18+ miles, until he realized he could no longer ride. Alzheimer took that from him.  When he passed, he left Evan one of his bicycles which he still rides and on November 16th,  Evan will be riding the 33 mile route in Ben's honor!

General Admission  $35includes a grab bag with gifts from our sponsors to the first 100 Pre-Register riders.

Ride also includes SAG support, stocked rest stop with snacks and drinks, well controlled ride with designated Ride Marshals and Ride Leaders.

Premium Admission $45includes all of the above plus a one year membership to SBW.

This year, our goal is to raise enough money towards the purchase of a Zeiss PALM MicroBeam Laser Capture Microdissection System

Alzheimer Disease is due to the abnormal death of brain cells important for memory. In the past decade, we have made considerable progress towards understanding the importance of specific genes that play critical roles in the development of AD. The next step is to understand how those genes affect brain cells, leading to the disease. One of the ways is to compare differences between brains from healthy older individuals with those from AD patients. However, the brain is composed of many different types of cells each of which makes a different contribution to AD.

The PALM MicroBeam Laser Capture Microdissection System is a special microscope that has a laser to isolate and then cut out individual brain cells. Identifying the specific type of cells that are affected by the genes leading to AD will allow for the development of drugs to treat and prevent AD to be targeted at the specific cellular source of the disease.
